When a big oil and gas company required specialized Inconel X-750 wave springs, they knew just who to call: Coiling Technologies, a recognized leader in manufacturing springs with high-performance alloys. Inconel X-750 is a precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium alloy and is highly valued for its exceptional ability to withstand high temperatures and resist corrosion, making it an ideal material for the demanding environments found in the oil and gas sector.

The future of oil and gas exploration is moving towards deep wells, especially in deepwater environments.  This is because most easily accessible, shallow oil fields have already been developed.  Deep wells, unlike shallow ones, often need high-performance, nickel-based alloys due to the harsher conditions encountered at greater depths.  The challenges of deep well drilling are significant, particularly concerning the extreme conditions encountered.  Corrosive environments are intensified by temperatures reaching up to 500°F (260°C) and pressures as high as 25,000 psi (172 MPa).  These conditions are typically more severe in deeper wells.

When selecting materials for demanding service environments, especially those requiring high reliability over an asset’s lifetime, materials must meet specific criteria for corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.  Age-hardened nickel-based alloys and cold-worked solid-solution nickel-base alloys are often preferred due to their superior characteristics, including high strength, toughness, low magnetic permeability, and excellent corrosion resistance.

The need for stronger materials that can be age-hardened is growing, especially for offshore oil and gas projects in deep wells, where weight is a big concern for cost.  Equipment used deep underground and at the wellhead, like hangers and safety valves, needs these age-hardenable alloys because they can get strong enough even in thick parts, unlike materials that rely on cold working.  Common nickel alloys used for these tough jobs include Incoloy alloy 925, Monel alloy K-500, and Inconel alloys 718, X-750, 725, and 725HS. INCONEL alloy X-750 is resistant to a wide variety of industrial corrosives under both oxidizing and reducing conditions. It resists oxidation and attack by other high-temperature corrosion mechanisms.
