Coiling Technologies is excited to support the manufacturing of the suspension springs in collaboration with Mubea for the 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, with its groundbreaking Hypercar performance stats.
The Role of Springs in Suspension Performance
The Corvette ZR1X’s suspension system is critical to being able to harness all the power that the ZR1X has to offer. With 1250 Hp on tap one can only imagine the incredible level of acceleration, coupled with a Carbon Disc braking system the largest brake package ever offered on a Corvette it goes without saying that the Corvette can “stop on dime” . The Corvette can accelerate at a rate of over 1.4 G’s and decelerate at over 1.9 G’s, while lateral acceleration exceeds 1 G. How do you harness all that power and incredible braking ability without proper handling, so that power cannot be properly applied to the road? It is only possible with a highly tuned suspension system.
The springs play a critical role in managing the Corvette ZR1X's longitudinal and lateral motions, including pitch, roll, and yaw. These motions generate forces that are counteracted by the springs, which are specifically designed to prevent the chassis from bottoming out and to control body movement as the vehicle approaches its performance limits. In addition to maintaining the vehicle's ride and handling characteristics, the springs also maintain vehicle ride height, ensuring proper ground clearance—a crucial factor for a high-performance car with rapid acceleration. The spring forces are further managed by the Magnetorheological (Mag) Ride Control dampers, which provide adaptive damping to keep the vehicle's movements in check and enhance overall stability.
Traction and Stability
The true shock absorbers in a suspension system are actually the springs, as they absorb and control the energy from road imperfections and bumps. This function is essential for maintaining both ride comfort and vehicle handling. In the Corvette ZR1X, the springs work in harmony with the Magnetic Ride Control dampers, which manage the suspension's compression and rebound oscillations. These adaptive dampers adjust to varying conditions—whether in comfort mode for normal driving or in a firmer setting to handle high-speed track performance. This adaptability is especially important in a car producing 1,250 horsepower, where traction and control are critical.
To further optimize suspension performance, the ZR1X is equipped with a helper spring. This component ensures the main spring stays properly seated during full suspension droop—such as when the vehicle becomes airborne at high-speed sections like “Flugplatz” on the Nürburgring circuit where the Corvette C8 was developed. Because the ZR1X’s spring rate is nearly four times that of a standard Corvette, the springs are significantly shorter and would become loose without the preload provided by the helper springs. Uniquely, these helper springs are made from rectangular cross-section material, which allows them to remain at coil bind during normal operation while still serving their purpose during extreme suspension travel.
Springs in Cornering and Braking
Finally, springs are critical in managing the vehicle dynamic forces during acceleration, braking, and cornering. Stiffer springs, which are common in high-performance cars like the ZR1X, help minimize the body roll and enhance the handling response of the vehicle. All these elements come together to enable the ZR1X to achieve its incredible longitudinal and lateral acceleration while maintaining control at speeds approaching 233 mph! where only Hypercars roam.
