Mil-Spec Spring Manufacturer

Coiling Technologies, Inc., designs and manufactures custom mil-spec springs for harsh environments and advanced equipment that depend on precision components to accomplish their missions smoothly and safely.

Many industries requiring mil-spec springs rely on intricately designed equipment that must perform at the highest altitudes, so compromising on detail, quality, or functionality is not an option in these sectors.

Customized springs utilized by the industries involving harsh environments require intensive attention in both the design and manufacturing processes. Springs designed and manufactured by Coiling Technologies, Inc., provide corrosion resistance and unique material properties to withstand the most extreme environments experienced within these industries. The springs may operate in cryogenic environments near 0 Kelvin (-273 C / -460 F) to extremely high temperatures of 1143 Kelvin (870 C / 1600 F).

Mil-Spec Springs FAQs

What are mil-spec springs?

Mil-spec springs are springs built to military specifications, meaning the drawing or contract names the material, dimensional, process, and test requirements and every delivered part has to conform to them. The term describes a product category, not an approval a supplier carries. Coiling Technologies builds mil-spec springs by working to the specification a customer puts on the drawing, including material and heat treat callouts, and documenting the finished parts against it. Compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, wave springs, and large suspension springs can all be built this way. Name the governing specification and revision in your request so the build starts from the right document.

Is Coiling Technologies a certified mil-spec spring manufacturer?

Coiling Technologies is a mil-spec spring manufacturer in the sense that it builds and heat treats springs to the military specifications a customer names, but it does not hold a mil-spec certification. The only quality system certification the company holds is ISO 9001:2015, audited regularly. There is no ITAR registration, DFARS registration, or QPL listing to represent, and none should be inferred from the term. Specification requirements on your drawing are treated as build and heat treat requirements that the parts are manufactured to and documented against. If your contract flows down a registration at the spring supplier level, state it in the request for quote so the fit is settled up front.

How does the process work for custom mil-spec springs?

Custom mil-spec springs start with either a finished drawing or a set of performance requirements. With a drawing, engineering reviews it against the specification callouts for material, heat treatment, finish, and testing. With only load, travel, envelope, and environment, the spring design team develops the geometry and material to meet them. Prototyping is available before production, so a load target can be checked on real parts. Coiling Technologies designs, prototypes, and produces in house, which means the shop that built your prototype builds the production run and the qualification data stays relevant. Send the drawing, specification and revision, quantity, and any test requirements with the request for quote.

What materials are used for custom mil-spec springs?

The published material list covers alloy steels including chrome silicon, 5160H, and 51CrV, stainless steel, nickel alloys including Inconel 718, Inconel X-750, MP35N, Elgiloy, and Nimonic 90, and high temperature alloys including Haynes 282, Rene 41, and Waspaloy. Environment drives the choice. Chrome silicon and 5160H handle high load work at ambient temperature. Stainless steel and the nickel alloys cover corrosive and shipboard service. Inconel and the high temperature alloys cover heat and pressure. MP35N and Elgiloy pair corrosion resistance with fatigue strength and are non magnetic. If your specification names a material, it governs. If it does not, engineering can recommend one from the operating conditions.

Can Coiling Technologies make mil-spec springs for extreme environments?

Yes. Coiling Technologies can produce springs that may see very high temperatures, cryogenic temperatures, and corrosive environments, conditions often found in aerospace applications among others. No single alloy covers all of them, so material is matched to the environment. Nickel superalloys such as Inconel 718 and X-750, along with Haynes 282, Rene 41, and Waspaloy, address heat. Inconel 718 also holds up at cryogenic temperatures. Corrosive service points to stainless steel, MP35N, Elgiloy, or Inconel, and powder coating is applied in house. Tell us the temperature range, the media the spring will contact, and the duty cycle so material and processing can be set against them.

What documentation comes with mil-spec springs?

Coiling Technologies can supply material certifications carrying actual chemistry and mechanical property data for the heat used, dimensional inspection reports with measured values against your drawing tolerances, first article inspection documentation, load test data, and traceability from the finished spring back to the incoming raw material. First article inspection is a feature by feature verification of an initial part against the drawing, and buyers commonly require it on a new part number, after a revision, or after a process change. State the documentation package and the revision the first article is written against in your request for quote, because the record has to be planned before the first coil is wound.

Why does it matter that a mil-spec spring manufacturer works from one facility?

Every handoff to an outside vendor adds a document to chase and a variable to control. At Coiling Technologies, design, prototyping, coiling, heat treating, non-destructive testing, shot peening, powder coating, and final inspection all happen in one Houston facility under one ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, without outsourcing. Thermal and process history stays attached to a single part record. When a load target needs correction, coiling parameters and the heat treat cycle can be adjusted together instead of through two suppliers. Shot peening, which puts the wire surface into residual compression, is available in house for parts where fatigue life governs. Supply your cycle count and duty cycle so stress can be set against it.
